Rose festival in Kazanlak - Valley of roses
The oil-yielding rose - Rosa Damascena, one of the symbols of Bulgaira, was brought from India via Persia, Syria and Turkey. In the 19th century Rosa Damascena became the greatest wealth of the Kazanlak region. Rose picking lasts for about a month - from May 20 to June 20, but that depends on the spring weather conditions. Picking is done every morning from 5 a.m. till 9-10 a.m .May and June are the most majestic months in the Valley of Roses, as the rose fields are blossoming and the entire valley is enveloped with their fragrance. In the first weekend of June the traditional Rose Festival takes place in the town of Kazanlak. The guests participate to the festival event “rose picking in the rose fields”, visit authentic rose distillery and taste the famous ethereal oils (lavender, mint), as well as rose liqueur and rose jam.
The traditional Rose Festival in Kazanluk reached its culmination on Sundays with a parade through the town's main street. The parade started at noon from the town square "Sevtopolis". Before the parade a Rose Queen title and a Best Photographer award are presented each year as part of the festival's agenda. The Rose Festival attracts many tourists from Bulgaria and abroad every year and is one of the most famous traditional events in the country.
